April 23 Is Record Store Day 2022

Posted by James Duncan on

This coming week it's Record Store Day 2022! This year taking place on April 23, the goal of the day is to celebrate and foster support for independently owned record stores.

Each participating record store plans special events that reflect their community and celebrate special artist releases planned around the day. Special pressings are typically manufactured in limited quantities and offered only for sale on this specific day at participating stores.

Record Store Day has helped increase sales of vinyl and contributed to the growing trend of vinyl exceeding CD sales that was first observed in 2019. The day was founded in 2007 by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, and Don Van Cleave, which makes this year the 15th anniversary of the event.

Each year an ambassador is chosen to represent the day and for 2022 Taylor Swift has been named the official "sash bearer". According to recordstoreday.com Swift had this to say, in part, about the honor:

"I’m very proud to be this year's Global Ambassador for Record Store Day. The places where we go to browse and explore and discover music new and old have always been sacred to me. Record stores are so important because they help to perpetuate and foster music-loving as a passion... It’s been a true joy for me to watch vinyl sales grow in the past few years and we, the artists, have the fans to thank for this pleasant surprise. Happy Record Store Day, everyone! Stay safe out there."

So plan to head out to your local independently-owned record store to support a local business and grab some cool new vinyl.
