Just a couple of highlights from this week in music history!
JUL 26: Happy birthday to Roger Taylor! Born July 26, 1949, in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, England, Taylor is best known as the dynamic drummer and vocalist for the legendary rock band Queen. With his powerful playing style, distinctive high harmonies, and songwriting contributions, Taylor played a vital role in shaping Queen’s sound and global success.
Taylor began his musical journey in his teens, initially playing guitar before switching to drums. In 1970, he joined forces with Freddie Mercury, Brian May, and John Deacon to form Queen. His drumming added energy and flair to the band’s elaborate compositions, while his raspy, high-pitched vocals often provided memorable backing and occasional lead parts.
As a songwriter, Taylor contributed numerous hits to Queen’s catalog, including “Radio Ga Ga,” “A Kind of Magic,” “Breakthru,” and “I’m in Love with My Car.” His eclectic style blended rock with pop, funk, and electronic elements, reflecting his adventurous musical spirit.
Outside of Queen, Taylor pursued solo work and formed the band The Cross in the late 1980s. He later collaborated closely with Brian May in continuing Queen’s legacy after Freddie Mercury’s death, including touring with Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert.
Known for his charisma, technical skill, and creative vision, Roger Taylor remains a cornerstone of Queen’s enduring legacy and one of rock’s most respected drummers.

AUG 2: Today at #1 in 1984 on the Billboard Hot 100: "When Doves Cry" by Prince. It became a groundbreaking hit and his first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. Featured on the Purple Rain soundtrack, the song showcases Prince’s genre-defying style, blending rock, funk, pop, and soul. Notably, it has no bassline—a bold production choice that adds to its stark, emotional impact. Lyrically, the song explores the pain and complexity of a troubled relationship, reflecting themes of love, conflict, and vulnerability. Prince played all the instruments himself, displaying his remarkable musical prowess. With its raw emotion, haunting guitar solos, and innovative structure, "When Doves Cry" helped cement Prince’s reputation as a fearless, boundary-pushing artist and remains one of his most iconic tracks.
