BPI (British Phonographic Industry) Gold LP award for Elton John's Greatest Hits album presented to producer Gus Dudgeon. The album was released in November 1974 and was immediately certified Gold in the U.K. by BPI on Nov. 1, 1974 for £250,000 worth sold. The measure for BPI gold certification in the 70s was the monetary value of records sold, much like the RIAA "white matte" awards of the 60s and early 70s.
Containing a plethora of classic Elton John tracks, the album went to #1 on the UK Album chart, the U.S. Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and also in Canada, Australia and other territories. It was the biggest selling album in the U.S. in 1975 and was Elton's first RIAA Diamond seller (10 million sold) as well. See image for BPI certification information.*

Detailed Item Description: This is a first presentation BPI Gold award that would have been manufactured in 1975 making it approximately 46 years old. It is presented to Gus Dudgeon, producer of Elton John's "Your Song" and seven #1 albums including Madman Across the Water, Honky Château, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. Dudgeon also produced David Bowie's "Space Oddity" and worked with other major artists as well. Sadly, Dudgeon and his wife were killed in 2002 in a U.K. car accident.
The award is all original and in VG to Excellent condition, with only a very few minor scratches on the frame and slight mottling of the red felt matte in parts. Don't miss this terrific piece of Elton John history, with an excellent presentation.

Notes on the condition of all vintage awards like this one: Please do not buy this item if you want a brand new piece of memorabilia. These are historical artifacts from the year they were produced. As a result they may show signs of wear. Frankly, if you see a 20 to 50-year-old award purported to be in 100% perfect condition, it might be too good to be true. After all, an antique should have "good' wear. If not, you might want to question the piece.
As to where they came from, they could have been displayed in record label offices, recording studios, artist manager's offices, radio stations, private collector's homes and yes, of course, possibly the artist's or songwriter's home. Typically, we don't know all the places they may have been over the years other than what we've stated in the description.
