Platinum RIAA award for Nirvana's Nevermind album. Nirvana's legendary album was released September 24, 1991 and changed music. The release effectively ushered out hair metal and welcomed a new punk-infused raw rock sound. It was certified Platinum by the RIAA a couple of months later on November 27, 1991 by the RIAA.

The album went to #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album, fueled by incendiary single "Smells Like Teen Spirit".  Three other singles also did well on radio and MTV including "Come as You Are", "Lithium", and "In Bloom". On a worldwide basis Nevermind has sold over 30 million copies, making it one of the best selling albums of all time. In the U.S., by 1999 the album earned a RIAA Diamond award for selling 10 million copies. See image above for all the RIAA sales certifications of this album through the years*.

Detailed Item Description: This is a hard-to-find Nirvana first presentation RIAA Platinum award that would have been manufactured in 1991 when this style of RIAA award was made (RIAA "R hologram"). This award celebrates that first Platinum success 23 years ago. It is presented to the late Matt Markel, an Omaha area concert promoter and founder of KRRK, an alternative rock radio station.

This award is in original condition with unaltered components including original back with Dejay Products manufacturer stickers. The award is in VG to Excellent condition, with only a minor mar or two on the top frame rail.

Notes on the condition of all vintage awards: Please do not buy this item if you want a brand new piece of memorabilia. These are historical artifacts from the year they were produced. As a result they may show signs of wear. Frankly, if you see a 20 to 50-year-old award purported to be in 100% perfect condition, it might be too good to be true. After all, an antique should have "good' wear. If not, you might want to question the piece.

As to where they came from, they could have been displayed in record label offices, recording studios, artist manager's offices, radio stations, private collector's homes and yes, of course, possibly the artist's or songwriter's home. Typically, we don't know all the places they may have been over the years other than what we've stated in the description.

Finally, a word on photos: Our photos are zoomable so you can get a very good look. Do let us know if you want photos of any other details on our pieces and we'll be happy to provide.
