RIAA Platinum LP award for the debut self-titled album from Lionel Richie. Released on Sept. 27, 1982, it was certified Platinum by the RIAA on Dec. 9, 1982 for one million copies sold.

"Truly", "You Are", and "My Love" became hits for Richie on his first solo outing, which was actually recorded and released prior to him leaving The Commodores. "Truly" topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album reached #3 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart and #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums tally. By 1984 the album had been certified 4x Multi-Platinum by the RIAA for four million copies sold.*

Detailed Item Description: This is a first presentation RIAA Platinum "strip plate" award that would have been manufactured in 1982, making it approx. 41 years old. The award is presented to Terry Barnes, a producer of compilations and other projects for Motown and other labels.

This award appears to be completely unaltered and is in VG condition for a 41-year-old piece, with frame wear and minor mars on the plexiglass. This award has its' original backing paper in somewhat poor shape but intact and showing manufacturer sticker adhesive in the size, shape and location of a New York Frame & Picture Co. label.

Notes on the condition of all vintage RIAA awards: Please do not buy this item if you want a brand new piece of memorabilia. These are historical artifacts from the year they were produced. As a result they may show signs of wear. Frankly, if you see a 20 to 50-year-old award purported to be in 100% perfect condition, it might be too good to be true. After all, an antique should have "good' wear. If not, you might want to question the piece.

As to where they came from, they could have been displayed in record label offices, recording studios, artist manager's offices, radio stations, private collector's homes and yes, of course, possibly the artist's or songwriter's home. Typically, we don't know all the places they may have been over the years other than what we've stated in the description.
