RIAA Platinum Album award for the Buffalo Springfield album Retrospective: The Best Of Buffalo Springfield. Released on January 17, 1969 after the group disbanded in 1968, the album went Platinum for one million copies sold on April 12, 1989. In that the album was certified Gold also on this date, it is likely that the record label had not applied for RIAA certifications until that time, some 20 years after the album's release. Remember Buffalo Springfield bassist Bruce Palmer (1946-2004) and drummer Dewey Martin (1940-2009) with this award.

The group in which both Neil Young and Stephen Stills first made their mark first had a major hit with the Stills-penned "For What It's Worth" which is featured on this greatest hits album. Other notable tracks include "Bluebird",  "Expecting To Fly", "Mr. Soul" and more. The album reached #42 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart. See image above for the RIAA sales certification of this album*.

Detailed Item Description: Despite the 1969 release of this album, this is an official first presentation RIAA Platinum album award due to the RIAA certification date in 1989. Given the "R hologram" style, it would have been made around 1990 making it 32 years old. The award is presented to producer Charles Greene, who produced the Buffalo Springfield hit "For What It's Worth" and other of their tracks. Greene also worked with Dr. John, Iron Butterfly, Sonny and Cher, Allen Toussaint, Neil Young and others.

The award is in VG condition with only minor mars on frame and plexiglass. It does have a small hole at the very top of the matted area just above the platinum disc, likely because when hanging a hole got poked through. The backing paper is original with Ill Eagle Enterprises label.

Notes on the condition of all vintage RIAA awards like this one: Please do not buy this item if you want a brand new piece of memorabilia. These are historical artifacts from the year they were produced. As a result they may show signs of wear. Frankly, if you see a 20 to 50-year-old award purported to be in 100% perfect condition, it might be too good to be true. After all, an antique should have "good' wear. If not, you might want to question the piece.

As to where they came from, they could have been displayed in record label offices, recording studios, artist manager's offices, radio stations, private collector's homes and yes, of course, possibly the artist's or songwriter's home. Typically, we don't know all the places they may have been over the years other than what we've stated in the description.

Finally, a word on photos: Our photos are zoomable so you can get a very good look. Do let us know if you want photos of any other details on our pieces and we'll be happy to provide.
