The Grateful Dead 1966 "Frankenstein" FD-22 Poster 1st Printing - RARE

Regular price $2,995

A rare and special original first printing FD-22 Grateful Dead Avalon Ballroom 8/19-20/66 poster that has become one of the most popular early Family Dog posters around. Presented here in VF+ condition and with exceptional provenance since it is from the private home of a co-owner of Family Dog Productions.

Created by artists Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse and famous for its image of Frankenstein, the poster is, however, infamous due to the fact that the name of headliner artist The Grateful Dead is misspelled “Greatful.” The additional artist on the bill was Sopwith Camel.

According to vintage collectible poster experts this poster is very hard to find today in top condition. Most have extensive pinholes and folds, and many are discolored and/or faded. This example is in VF+ condition with only a single tack hole in each of its four corners and one small 1/2" (1.27 cm) tear on the right side. This is a Type A first printing that measures 14″ x 20″. It has clearly been carefully stored flat for many years and displays no roll marks.

The poster comes with a Letter of Provenance from Bob Cohen, Co-Owner and Co-Manager of The Family Dog Productions from 1966-68, who personally owned this poster until earlier in 2020. (See image--buyer will receive un-redacted letter)
