Pink Floyd, the classic, longest-running lineup of which included David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright. formed in 1965 with original vocalist/guitarist Syd Barrett. When the troubled Barrett left the group after a successful debut album, the lineup gelled as above to produce a series of increasingly popular and aclaimed albums including Meddle, The Dark Side Of The Moon, Animals, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall, amongst others. While they have since performed together a time or two, the last album produced by the full group that featured both Waters and Gilmour was 1983's The Final Cut.
A somewhat acrimonious split ended up with Waters touring on his own as a solo act, including performing The Wall in its entirety on several tours given it was primarily his creation, while Gilmour toured as Pink Floyd along with Mason and Wright. Both released numerous albums and continued to tour, although Wright died in 2008 effectively ending Pink Floyd according to Gilmour.
Pink Floyd has sold over 250 million albums worldwide, was inducted into the U.S. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005.
