Posted by Lilly Duncan on

Don't miss this year's Record Store Day, upcoming on April 20. It's always a great chance to get some cool, limited edition vinyl, check out some new releases, or just relive the glory days of flipping through some vinyl racks in your local record emporium.

You can check out the pretty exhaustive list of special released planned in participating U.S. record stores for this year's day here: https://recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases (Note: We have no affiliation with this website and, while we sell lots of vintage vinyl and other media that you can see here in our own Vinyl/Tapes/CDs section, we do not stock these new special releases).

What is Record Store Day?

Record Store Day is an annual event celebrated on the third Saturday in April. It was created in 2007 to celebrate the culture of independent record stores and to bring music fans and collectors together. While it takes place April 20 in 2024, the first Record Store Day was held on April 19, 2008, and it has since become a global phenomenon.

Record Store Day was founded by a group of independent record store owners and employees who were concerned about the decline of record sales and the impact of digital music on the music industry. They believed that independent record stores played a vital role in promoting and preserving music culture, and that they needed to be celebrated and supported.

The first Record Store Day was a huge success, with over 700 independent record stores participating in the United States alone. The event featured exclusive vinyl releases, in-store performances, and other special events. Fans lined up outside record stores early in the morning to get their hands on limited-edition releases from their favorite artists.

Since then, Record Store Day has grown into a global event, with over 2,000 independent record stores in more than 30 countries participating each year. The event continues to be a celebration of the unique culture of independent record stores, and an opportunity for fans and collectors to come together and celebrate their love of music.

One of the key features of Record Store Day is the exclusive vinyl releases that are made available on the day. These releases are often limited-edition or rare, and are only available at participating record stores. Many of the releases are by major artists, but there are also releases from up-and-coming artists and lesser-known bands. Some of the most popular releases over the years have included releases from the likes of David Bowie, Prince, and The Beatles.

In addition to the exclusive vinyl releases, Record Store Day also features in-store performances, meet and greets with artists, and other special events. Many record stores host parties and other events to celebrate the day, and some stores even offer discounts on vinyl and other merchandise.

Record Store Day has had a significant impact on the music industry, helping to revive interest in vinyl and independent record stores. Since its inception, vinyl sales have increased dramatically, with many record stores reporting record-breaking sales on Record Store Day. The event has also helped to raise awareness of the importance of supporting independent record stores and preserving music culture.

Overall, Record Store Day is a celebration of music and the culture of independent record stores. It brings together music fans and collectors from around the world, and has helped to promote and preserve the unique culture of independent record stores.
